A PATH FORWARD Celso and his family immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 2012. In addition to the challenge of assimilating into American culture, Celso's family had to navigate the disability system in pursuit of the best training and support for students on the Autism Spectrum. "As a parent, we had a lot of questions," Celso's dad shared. "We don't know what is going to be in the future." Celso's family was introduced to Goodwill's Transition Work Adjustment Training designed to help high school students and recent graduates prepare for the workplace. At Goodwill Celso practiced social skills and interaction, learned appropriate work behaviors and explored career options. "His confidence grew so much that he began training the other students in class," Celso's Goodwill Job Coach Kim said. After Celso completed the Transition Work Adjustment Training, he entered Goodwill's Supported Employment program. He was assigned to a Goodwill Job Coach, who went alongside Celso as he filled out job applications, went to job interviews and eventually to on-the-job training once he was offered a position at Lowe's. "Every day is an excitement for him to go to his job," Celso's mom said. "We hope there will be more companies who help adults like Celso to be in a workplace in order to develop themselves to be independent and to be happy in their lives." Celso received his One Year of Service badge from Lowe's in March and exclaims "I've been doing excellent!" "He shows up for work every day and is very dependable," Lowe's Front End Manager Laurie said. "You just don't have a bad day when Celso is here." "At one point, we did not know if he was going to work," Celso's dad said. "Now I see a path forward for Celso to become independent." Celso received Goodwill's Graduate of the Year award in May.
